On Saturday 11 May 2024, the British Nuclear Test Veterans Association (BNTVA) joined fellow organisations, veterans, and supporters at the Nuclear Community Charity Fund (NCCF) convention and gala dinner, held at the Hilton Hotel, East Midlands Airport. The event brought together members of the wider nuclear and Cold War communities for a day of commemoration, collaboration, and shared storytelling.
A standout feature of the event was the display of historic military vehicles – generously supported by Social Auto Luxury Tours (SALT) and the Military Vehicle Trust (MVT) – which drew enthusiastic interest from attendees. These striking vehicles served as powerful physical reminders of the Cold War era and were a popular focal point throughout the day.

Dr. Peter Robinson delivered a well-received talk on The Cold War Network and the Leeds Beckett University Cold War Project, developed with support from The British Academy. His presentation highlighted the Network’s growing role in Cold War heritage and education, and the innovative work being carried out by students at Leeds Beckett University. It also marked the first public outing for the new Cold War Network logo, signalling a fresh phase for the project’s identity and outreach.
The event also provided a valuable opportunity to connect with Cold War veterans, whose generous conversations and shared experiences added depth and meaning to the day. Learning firsthand about their personal stories was both moving and inspiring for all who attended.
Reflecting on the day, Nigel Heaps MBE remarked:
“This has been a great first for the Cold War Network. It’s clear evidence of the power of cooperation between common-interest organisations – a real signpost to the future.”

As the Cold War Network continues to build bridges between academia, heritage organisations, and veterans’ communities, events like this underscore the importance of shared memory, respectful dialogue, and collaborative heritage work in preserving the stories of a pivotal era in modern history.
