Leeds Beckett Students Present Cold War Network Consultancy Work

Final-year students from Leeds Beckett University’s School of Events, Tourism and Hospitality Management recently took part in a standout academic experience as they delivered their consultancy presentations for members of the Cold War Network.

As part of their final assessments, students undertook research and consultancy work focused on Cold War heritage – exploring how museums and heritage sites can be supported. The presentations served as the culmination of months of research, planning, and engagement with heritage professionals, under the guidance of university staff and the Network’s Steering Group.

Among the highlights of the event was the involvement of students Aislinn Rainey, Olivia Reynolds, and Sara Bramley, who were rewarded with a memorable encounter – getting up close with two iconic Cold War-era vehicles: an Austin Champ, used by the British military, and a Trabant, the symbol of everyday life in East Germany. These historic vehicles were brought in by members of the Cold War Network Steering Group, who are helping to shape the vision for how Cold War history can be made accessible and engaging to the public.

The event not only celebrated the students’ achievements but also showcased the value of university partnerships with cultural and historical organisations. It highlighted how academic work can contribute meaningfully to national heritage and public understanding. As the Cold War Network continues to grow, it is clear that students and educators alike are playing an important role in preserving and interpreting this complex period of 20th-century history.
