In another boost to their collaborative partnership, The Cold War Network and The Military Vehicle Trust joined forces at the 2025 Chatsworth Country Fair, captivating thousands of visitors with an immersive Cold War display.
Chatsworth Country Fair is one of England’s most spectacular outdoor events, held in the 1,000-acre parkland surrounding Chatsworth House. Across three action-packed days, the fair showcases everything from Grand Ring entertainment and inspirational cookery demonstrations to food stalls, shopping, and hands-on activities for all ages.
This year, the Cold War Network and Military Vehicle Trust added a unique historical dimension, recreating scenes from the divided Europe of the Cold War. Among the highlights of the display were two iconic vehicles: the Austin Champ, a rugged British military vehicle designed in the early 1950s as a post-war alternative to the Jeep, and the Trabant, the East German people’s car that became a symbol of life behind the Iron Curtain.
Together, these vehicles provided a striking visual contrast – representing both Western military might and the austere realities of everyday Eastern Bloc life. Visitors were able to step close, ask questions, and imagine what it might have felt like to approach an East/West border crossing during one of the tensest periods in modern history.
Cold War Network member Alan Rawsterne reflected on the weekend:
“From espionage to everyday life behind the Iron Curtain, the public interest in our Cold War display was absolutely fantastic. We had so many thoughtful conversations and met many curious minds – thank you to everyone who stopped by and for making our weekend unforgettable!”
